Understanding Oral Cancer

Oral cancer can manifest in various forms, affecting the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, hard and soft palate, and the throat. It can develop without any obvious symptoms, which makes regular screenings vital. While certain risk factors—such as smoking, chewing tobacco, and heavy alcohol consumption—are well-known contributors to the development of oral cancer, it’s essential to understand that many individuals diagnosed with this disease may not exhibit these risk factors at all. This unpredictability underscores the necessity for routine screenings.

Recognizing Symptoms

During your dental visit, our team will be vigilant for symptoms that could indicate the presence of oral cancer. Common warning signs include:

  • White or Red Patches: These patches may appear on the tongue, gums, or other areas inside the mouth and can be precursors to more severe conditions.
  • Sore Throat: A persistent sore throat that doesn’t heal may be indicative of underlying issues.
  • Lumps or Swellings: Any unusual lumps in the mouth, jaw, or neck should not be ignored, as they can signify abnormal growth.
  • Numbness or Loss of Feeling: A loss of sensation in the mouth or face can be an alarming symptom that requires attention.
  • Difficulty Swallowing or Chewing: If you experience trouble when eating or speaking, it could be a sign of oral health problems.
  • Voice Changes: Changes in your voice, or feeling hoarse for an extended period, can also signal the need for further evaluation.
  • Sores or Ulcers: Unexplained sores on the face, mouth, or neck that do not heal should be brought to our attention.
  • Unexplained Bleeding: Any unexplained bleeding in the mouth is a cause for concern and should be investigated.
  • Weight Loss: Significant and unexplained weight loss can sometimes be related to serious health issues, including oral cancer.

The Screening Process

At Navesink Dental Care, we take a comprehensive approach to oral cancer screening. During your dental exam, our experienced team will begin by discussing your health history and any symptoms you may be experiencing. This dialogue helps us understand your overall health and any potential risk factors.

Following this discussion, we will conduct a thorough visual inspection of your mouth. We will look for any abnormal lesions, patches, or growths that may require further evaluation. Additionally, we will palpate the jaw and neck to check for any lumps or swelling that could indicate underlying issues.

If we find any suspicious areas, we may recommend a biopsy to distinguish between common lesions and potentially cancerous or pre-cancerous conditions. This procedure involves taking a small sample of tissue for laboratory analysis, allowing for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Lifestyle and Prevention

While routine screenings are essential, being aware of your lifestyle choices is also crucial in reducing your risk of oral cancer. Avoiding tobacco products, moderating alcohol consumption, and maintaining a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables can all contribute to better oral health. Additionally, practicing good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing daily can help keep your mouth healthy.

It’s also important to stay vigilant about changes in your mouth and to communicate any concerns with our dental team. If you notice any unusual symptoms between your regular check-ups, don’t hesitate to reach out for guidance.

As a new patient at Navesink Dental Care today, I was highly impressed with the staff and services. I recently moved to New Jersey and, in my search for an in-network provider for my insurance, I have spoken to staff at several local practices whose employees I found to be polite but not as friendly and informative as the folks here. I also researched new patient specials online and Navesink is the best I found in that category too. Thanks to the hygienist’s tools and skill, I had no discomfort with cleaning. My exam and x-rays were thoroughly done and explained. When the dentist came in, she was not rushed and took time to answer my questions. When I checked out, the lady at the front desk gave me verbal and written information to compare insurance options and provided me with a written plan for my follow-up treatment. Navesink Dental Care is everything I had hoped to find when I moved here and more.

I recently moved Red Bank so I needed a new dentist and my wife recommended I go where she goes, which was Navesink Dental, and I’m so happy she did. It started with Nicole at the front desk, who was greeted me with a smile and helped me get checked in. Then from there every person I seen when I walked in said hello and was extremely nice and helpful. Danielle did my filling and see did an amazing job making me feel comfortable and explaining everything as it was happening. Before I left, I thought to myself I’ve never been somewhere where every single person that I came across was so nice and welcoming. I would recommend everyone come here.

I’m new to the area and tried a few dental offices before finding Navasink Dental Care, and I’m really glad I did. From the very first phone call to my first visit, I genuinely felt at home. The entire team is welcoming, professional, and truly kind. I’ll be honest—I’m not the easiest patient—but they took the time to explain everything clearly, answered all my questions, and never made me feel rushed. I also never felt pressured into unnecessary treatments, which is rare and hugely appreciated. It’s hard to find a dental office that’s both reliable and honest, but this one absolutely is. The office is well run, appointments are on time, and every staff member is genuinely warm and welcoming. The care feels thoughtful and thorough. I finally feel like I’ve found my go-to dentist and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a place they can truly trust. Thank God I no longer have to drive two hours to Long Island—this is finally starting to feel like home.
