Occlusal Adjustment

Bite Adjustment to Correct Jaw Misalignment

Jaw misalignment can be caused as teeth develop, from an accident that damages the jawbone, or can accumulate over time with wear. Dental work such as fillings, crowns, bridges, and extractions can also cause your jaw to become misaligned. The misalignment can prevent the jaw from fully sliding into its anatomically correct position. Bite, or occlusal, adjustment is a dental procedure performed to remove tiny interferences that keep teeth from coming together properly.

When your jaw is misaligned, the muscles of the jaw and neck are never able to fully relax. This may result in severe headaches and neck aches. Many patients develop bruxism, or teeth grinding, as their jaw seeks its natural position. Bruxism can cause bone loss, tooth loss, and receding gums. Overtime, patients may develop TMJ, or tempromandibular joint issues, if left untreated.

Symptoms of Jaw Misalignment:
  • Jaw does not open evenly on both sides
  • Jaw makes a clicking noise as it opens
  • The enamel has been ground away in certain areas
  • Fractured teeth
  • Chronic headaches or neck aches
